I do some volunteer work in the area of the trafficking in human beings (THB). As UNODC notes, this horrendous crime impacts millions of people globally, forcing them into exploitative situations ‘for the purpose of sexual exploitation… forced labour, domestic servitude, child begging or the removal of their organs.’
United Nations Vienna – January 2018
A panel at the ACUNS Vienna Conference looked at issues connected to women and war, including disarmament, refugee issues and human trafficking. Jean-Luc Lemahieu of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) joined this panel and gave an important talk on the Blue Heart Campaign against Human Trafficking which ‘works to raise awareness of the plight of victims and to build political support to fight the criminals behind trafficking.’
Diplomatic Academy Vienna – September 2017
I moderated an event in September 2017: Preventing Human Trafficking through Air Transport Systems. Goals are to create a global network for the fight against human trafficking – and to foster partnership between government agencies, international organizations at the global and regional levels (including UNODC and the OSCE), the private sector, academia, and civil society.
Diplomatic Academy Vienna – May 2017
I moderated an event in late May 2017: Modern Day Slavery Is the Human Rights Issue of Our Time – A Discourse about Social Innovations for Effective Crime Prevention in Human Trafficking. The international panelists presented ways to detect signs of human trafficking and discussed how to react appropriately to prevent serious crimes from happening within one’s sphere of influence. Here is an overview of the event and some ‘red flags’ regarding trafficking on flights.
